Tape hopscotch
- Builds: Hopping on one foot
- 15 min
- Ages 4–6
- Energetic
- No mess
From the house
- Masking or painter’s tape
- A marker
- A rolled-up pair of socks
How to play
- Tape eight squares in a hopscotch shape (1, 2, 3 in a row, 4 and 5 side by side, 6, then 7 and 8 side by side) and write the numbers on the tape.
- Hop on one foot in the single squares and land on two feet in the pairs, softly like a cat.
- Turn around at the end and hop back.
- Now toss the sock into a square, hop over that square, and pick the sock up on the way back.
Fit it to your child
- Easier: Jump with two feet in every square and leave the sock out.
- Harder: Hop the whole way on their other foot, and say each number out loud as they land.
Words to use
- hop
- one foot
- two feet
- land
- turn
- numbers
Why it helps
Hopping on one foot and switching to two takes balance, leg strength and planning, and the numbers come along for free.
Grown-up eyes: Play barefoot on smooth floors, since socks slip.
