Paper dice race
- Builds: Counting on to 20
- 15 min
- Ages 4–6
- Calm
- No mess
From the house
- Paper and a pencil
- A cup or bowl
- A small toy for each player
How to play
- Make paper dice: draw 1 to 6 dots on six slips of paper, fold them and drop them in the cup.
- Draw a wiggly track of 20 squares, number them, and draw a star on 20.
- Take turns pulling out a slip, saying how many dots, and moving your toy that many squares.
- Put the slip back each time; the first to reach the star wins.
Fit it to your child
- Easier: Use only 1 to 3 dots and a track of 10 squares.
- Harder: Pull out two slips each turn and add them together before you move.
Words to use
- how many dots
- move
- count on
- your turn
- twenty
Why it helps
Spotting how many dots at a glance, then counting on along a numbered track, builds a feel for numbers up to 20.
