Numbers & math
Pasta snake
- Builds: Counting as it grows
- 15 min
- Ages 2–5
- Calm
- No mess
From the house
- Big tube pasta (penne, rigatoni)
- A shoelace, or string with tape on the end
How to play
- Knot one end of the lace so the pasta can’t slide off.
- They thread the pasta on, one piece at a time.
- Count the pieces as the snake gets longer.
- Give the snake a name and let it slither across the table.
Fit it to your child
- Easier: Use the biggest tubes and count together up to five.
- Harder: Make two snakes, guess which has more pieces, then count to check.
Words to use
- in
- through
- long

- three
Why it helps
Adding one piece at a time shows them that each number is one more than the last, and that more pieces make a longer snake.
Grown-up eyes: Make a snake, not a necklace, and keep it off their neck. Sit with them: dry pasta is a choking risk.
