- Ages 2–5
- Calm
- A little tidy-up
From the house
- A tray or towel
- 2–3 cups in different sizes
- A funnel or the top of a cut bottle
- Dry rice or pasta
How to play
- Fill one cup with rice and put it on the tray with the empty cups.
- Show them how to pour slowly from cup to cup.
- Add the funnel: pour through it and watch.
- Talk about it: full, empty, a little, a lot.
Fit it to your child
- Easier: Use one cup and a big bowl to pour into, so nothing spills over.
- Harder: Guess how many small cups will fill a big one, then count as they pour to check.
Words to use
- pour
- full
- empty
- more
- a little
Why it helps
Full, empty, a little and a lot are their first measuring words, and pouring shows them that different cups hold different amounts.
Grown-up eyes: Sit with them. Rice and pasta fit in noses, ears and mouths.
