Confidence & feelings
Banana coins
- Builds: Using a real tool
- 10 min
- Ages 2–5
- Calm
- A little tidy-up
From the house
- A banana
- A butter knife or plastic knife
- A cutting board
How to play
- They peel the banana, and you start the top for them if needed.
- Show them how to hold it with one hand and saw with the knife.
- They cut “coins”: thick or thin, they all count.
- Share them, or freeze them for a treat tomorrow.
Fit it to your child
- Easier: Cut the banana in half first and steady the board while they saw.
- Harder: Move on to a strawberry or a soft pear, and they serve a plate to everyone at home.
Words to use
- peel
- cut
- slice
- soft
- I did it
Why it helps
Being trusted with a real (safe) tool, and seeing a plate of coins they cut, builds confidence and focus.
Grown-up eyes: Butter knife or plastic knife only, and keep sharp knives out of reach. Everyone sits down to eat.
