Words & stories
Cardboard-box ride
- Builds: Storytelling through pretend
- 15 min
- Ages 2–5
- Calm
- No mess
From the house
- A big cardboard box
- Crayons
- A teddy and a bag to pack
How to play
- They climb in. Is it a car, a boat or a rocket?
- Pack the bag for the trip: teddy, a cup, a book.
- Make the sounds: vroom, splash, 3-2-1 blast off!
- “Where are we going?” Arrive and look around.
Fit it to your child
- Easier: Push them gently around the room and say “go” and “stop”, and let them shout it back.
- Harder: Plan the trip first: where you’re going, what to pack and what might go wrong on the way.
Words to use
- go
- stop
- fast
- bye-bye
- where
Why it helps
Deciding where the box is going and what happens there is early storytelling, full of new words for places and travel.
Grown-up eyes: Pull out any staples first, and pack a cloth bag or backpack, not a plastic bag.
