Confidence & feelings
This or that?
- Builds: Making choices
- 10 min
- Ages 1–3
- Calm
- No mess
From the house
- Pairs of everyday things: two cups, two books, two hats, two spoons
- A teddy
How to play
- Hold up two things, one in each hand, and ask, “This one or that one?”
- Whatever they point to or reach for, say it out loud: “You chose the red cup.”
- Use their choice right away: drink from the cup, read the book, wear the hat.
- Now they choose for you and for teddy, and you go along with it happily.
Fit it to your child
- Easier: Hold the two things far apart so a reach or a look is easy to read, and accept either as a choice.
- Harder: Offer three things, and ask them to say why: “Why the blue hat?”
Words to use
- this
- that
- which one
- you chose
- mine
Why it helps
Small choices that really count show them their ideas matter, which is where self-confidence starts.
