Making & creating
Lid posting box
- Builds: Turning and fitting
- 10 min
- Ages 1–2
- Calm
- No mess
From the house
- A shoebox or tissue box
- 4–6 big plastic lids from tubs or jars
- Scissors or a craft knife, for you
How to play
- Cut a slot in the top of the box, a little longer than your biggest lid and about a finger wide.
- Show them how to turn a lid on its edge and push it through. Clunk!
- They post every lid, then you open the box together: there they are.
- Tip them out and start again.
Fit it to your child
- Easier: Start with a big round hole (a tissue box already has one) so the lids drop straight in.
- Harder: Cut a second, thinner slot and let them work out which lids fit where.
Words to use
- in
- push
- gone
- there it is
- clunk
Why it helps
Turning a lid to line it up with the slot teaches their hands to fit one thing into another, the start of building.
Grown-up eyes: You do the cutting. Use only plastic lids too big to fit through a toilet-paper roll, never metal lids with sharp edges.
