Tear-it-yourself salad

  • Builds: Cooking for the family
  • 10 min
  • Ages 2–5
  • Calm
  • A little tidy-up

From the house

  • Lettuce or spinach
  • A big bowl
  • A salad spinner (optional)

How to play

  1. Rinse the leaves together.
  2. They tear them into small pieces into the bowl.
  3. Spin them dry while they turn the handle.
  4. Serve it at dinner as “my salad”.

Fit it to your child

  • Easier: Skip the spinner and pat the leaves dry in a towel; tearing is the whole job.
  • Harder: They make a simple dressing too, shaking a little oil and lemon juice in a closed plastic tub.

Words to use

  • tear
  • wash
  • spin
  • green
  • leaf

Why it helps

Serving “my salad” to the family makes them proud, and children eat more vegetables they prepared themselves.

Grown-up eyes: Wash hands first, keep fingers out of the spinner while it turns, and tear leaves small for little ones.
