Touch tour
- Builds: Words for touch
- 10 min
- Ages 1–4
- Calm
- No mess
From the house
- Nothing. The house is the material.
How to play
- Walk around the house hand in hand.
- Touch things and say how they feel: the soft blanket, the cold fridge, the bumpy towel.
- Find two things that feel the same.
- They lead the way to the next thing to touch.
Fit it to your child
- Easier: Carry them, touch one thing at a time and repeat one word: “Soft. So soft.”
- Harder: Hunt for opposites: something soft, then something hard; something warm, then something cold.
Words to use
- soft
- cold
- warm
- bumpy
- smooth
- rough
Why it helps
Hearing a word while their hand feels it makes the word stick, and one walk adds lots of describing words at once.
Grown-up eyes: Steer clear of the stove, heaters and outlets.
