Play ideas for 1-year-olds

At one, play is touching, tasting and doing it again: filling and emptying, banging, pointing and peekaboo. Ten minutes on the floor with you, naming everything they touch, is plenty.

  • Keep it short and follow their lead: when they lose interest, switch.
  • Say one or two words over and over: “in”, “out”, “more”, “all gone”.
  • Repeat favorites. Playing the same game again is how they learn.

Safety at 1: One-year-olds put almost everything in their mouths. Use only big, sturdy things: nothing that fits through a toilet-paper roll, no beads, coins, dry beans or balloons, and stay within arm’s reach around water.
